Holland is a stunning landscape of brilliant architecture, canals, ports, museums and history. While there are certainly a number of sights to see and many excellent paid tours there are also quite a few free attractions in the cities and the countryside.
A free ferry will take you from the South to North Amsterdam and back. This is a very pleasant journey and a free opportunity to travel along one of the country’s many waterways. The Dutch are generally very proud of their country and will willingly provide directions and information.
In Amsterdam there are popular walking tours which ask only for a donation. The tour is 3 hours and covers the interesting aspects of the city center as well as the red light district and canal areas. Tourists are asked only to contribute what they can afford and what they think the tour was worth.
The Hague music festivals run throughout the month of June and they are all free. For this month of the year The Hague becomes the cultural center of the Netherlands with a huge range of musical entertainment offered. Parkpop is a favorite of The Hague festivals. The festival host’s pop music from around the world and hundreds of stalls selling music, rarities and food.
